Couples Therapy for One

Many people, frustrated in marriage, see couple’s counseling as a solution.  With some frequency, their partner has a different opinion.  I find this Wall Street Journal article insightful as to how going to therapy alone can ultimately help the marriage.

Identifying "red flags"

I love reading advice columns.  They can succinctly express ideas with which I have been struggling.  This article in the Seattle Times speaks to how manipulators create self-doubt in the other person in the relationship.  It points to how if you are feeling shame about yourself because of how the other person is acting, you should really question the relationship.

Power of Attorney

Power of Attorney documents have been the way in which elder people have been able to turn over management of their finances and other matters to family or friends.  This legal mechanism is no longer fail-safe.  The Wall Street Journal gives advice about what to do in these situations in this interesting article.  Of course, there is no substitute for talking with your personal attorney.

Keeping a Paper Trail

There’s a lot of encouragement by organizations to send out electronic records rather than  paper ones.  While convenient in some ways, there are some documents that need to be kept in paper.  This article lets you know which are which.

The Bad News

Frequently people lose weight successfully and then gain it all back. Why?   This New York Times article explains why after losing weight, the need for caloric intake decreases.  Folks think they can return to “normal” meaning unbridled eating after losing weight.  This, unfortunately, isn’t true.  Slightly modifying the food plan that allowed for the weight loss is a more successful approach to long term weight maintenance.

Food Addiction

This research based article in Eating Well magazine appeals to scientifically minded people for whom understanding creates behavior change. It explains the brain chemistry of uncontrolled wanting of food.  In the middle of a craving, I’m experimenting with saying “It’s just the dopamine in my brain wanting pleasure” and then seeing if I can find a non food pleasure to substitute.

Ginger for motion sickness?  Menthol rub for toe nail fungus?  AARP gathers together some interesting ideas to try for common ailments.  Of course, use your judgement as to when to call your doctor.

Detaching

It’s difficult to comprehend the apparently contradictory concepts of caring and letting go.  This article by Martha Beck explains it beautifully.  I caution, however, to make sure have arrived at an internal state of not caring (not about the person, but about what they do) before saying so.
